Our Vision

Abilities in Action is driven by a vision of a society in which all children are included regardless of ability.  In achieving this vision,  Abilities in Action and its employees respect the inherent dignity and rights of all individuals.

Our History

Abilities in Action was founded by Kristy Caldarella and Tony Caldarella in September 2006, recruiting Lauren Gallagher as the Director of Occupational Therapy to design a sensory integration gym and develop the occupational therapy program.  Abilities in Action opened its first center in Oceanport, New Jersey, on January 31, 2007.  By June 2008,  Abilities in Action had already outgrown their original space and an expansion was in progress.  Positive reviews and word of mouth drew patients from all over central New Jersey to Abilities in Action.  Recognizing that families were traveling quite a distance for our services, Abilities in Action decided to open a second center in Wall, New Jersey, in October 2011.  Kelly Sheehan was promoted as the Clinical Director of the Wall facility and is now the Director of Clinical Operations for both offices.  In July 2013, the Oceanport center  relocated to a larger facility conveniently located in Shrewsbury, New Jersey.  In January 2016, both centers expanded, doubling each center's therapy space.  We have grown into one of the most respected multidisciplinary therapy providers in Monmouth County, serving families from two convenient locations in Shrewsbury and Wall, New Jersey. With a team of more than 60 licensed pediatric therapists, Abilities in Action is committed to evidence-based, family-centered care that supports each child’s unique developmental needs. We collaborate closely with pediatricians, specialists, and caregivers to ensure clear communication, timely evaluations, and continuity of care.

• Highly Trained Clinicians: Our therapists hold specialized training in areas such as sensory integration, feeding, AAC, PROMPT, DTTC, neurodevelopmental treatment, and ABA based approaches.
• Interdisciplinary Expertise: Our PTs, OTs, and SLPs collaborate regularly and share strategies for consistent, coordinated care.
• Comprehensive Evaluations: Evaluations are 1½–2 hours and include a detailed intake and pre-evaluation consultation to ensure we understand the child’s history, parent concerns, and goals.
• High-Quality Treatment Sessions: Therapy sessions are typically one hour, allowing time for targeted intervention, parent education, and progress updates.
• Strong Communication: We stay connected with families and physicians through regular progress updates and supportive recommendations.
• Efficient Scheduling: Approximately 85% of evaluations and treatment sessions are scheduled during the family’s initial call.
• On-Site Billing Support: All billing is handled directly by our team, not a third-party center. We work with insurers to correct misprocessed claims, pursue authorizations, file out-of-network claims, and assist families in obtaining GAP exceptions when possible.
